Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec love how almost topagraphical this is.. levels make it interesting and the geometric lines keep it clean

Office for Metropolitan Architecture wow pre-construction phase
i do love this photograf for what it is.. but i really do feel that they could have created a touch more atmosphere for the place with just a little more .... colour? playfulness? fun? .. not really sure what it is but it does not really look like a friendly place.. looks like its dark, industrial, cold, ..
but hey.. maybe that is what the team was going for.. anyhu

for a very long time now i have been extremely interested in the use of alternative materials for building.. and the containers fall under this. We have all been seeing the use of the shipping containers in architecture for some time now.. and it actually was first seen in 1982.. before me.
i have been extremely impressed lately with the work that is being produced with the containers.. not just the lego looking type unit but a REAL house with beautiful lines and it happens to use containers for part of it.. love it! i was reading an interesting article at sfgate.com .. they highlight many of the wonderful architects that are at the forefront of this area of design.. checkit chex it

i am not sure what it is.. but there is definitally something about this that makes me want to buy an huge old house.. paint it all matte black... move in and suck the blood of humans all day.. haha.. maybe it is how close my name is to the 1st dracula? jonathan harker (me = harper).. there is definitally something very interesting about this though.
when living in malta you would see so many old derilict building.. dirty are grose on the outside.. and i always imagined them being super mod and fantastic on the inside.. not likely but in my mind they were!

i would like to try a similar project.. maybe not with bricks.. but something like this pattern based... Kiki's

Seungchan Lee for CulArt... beautiful textures! It has an external key pad which i think is a little silly... but the design is very appealing.. the wood grain and the geometric shapes on the back.

The $1.5 million chair! Ok this chair is for sale on ebay right now.. i was doing my regular 'mid century' term search and i came accross this.. the people say that out of the 1.5mil that 55% of it will be donated to a charity.. ok.. wonderful.. what about the other 45%? I mean if they are really trying to do some good i think that thet fact that they are trying to keep 45% of the cost is just crazy.. but.. i assure you.. it will not sell for 1.5...

Trade commercial cappuccino machine for Glock or Smith -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply to: sale-544507552@craigslist.org Date: 2008-01-19, 1:20PM EST I have a commercial Bunn cappuccino machine that cost about $1,400. It was used very little. You can make cappuccino or hot choc. for just a few cents a cup. The mix, you can buy at Sams Club or from any coffee or foodservice. It runs on 110 volt and can be put in your kitchen, all you need is a plug and water nearby. Here is a link with a pic and more description. the above was found on the ever interesting craigslist.. i must not lie.. i am on there everyday in a few cities.. and there is always a great deal to be had as well as some funny things... hey.. if i had a glock laying around and i felt like a nice cappaccino.. i would be for sure tempted!!

Cadaval & Solá-Morales
I found this amazing peice of work when dragging throught the METROPOLIS site. I was just blown away with how simple and efficiant everything was.. just perfect almost. I am constantly dreaming of a place this simple and we have nearly achieved that at our new place here in Savannah.
things i like:
the furniture is all crafted by local individuals
LOW COST & low tech green
use of wind flow to cool
solid closures for weather/intrution (many have to hire people to watch a place when they are not there.. this prevents that)
the hammocks are amazing.. again.. local.. need one here to hang from the 25'.. would be beautiful and possibly border on elegant/playful.. fun combo
its just an all round forward thinking project.. congrats!
i sort of picture a place like this working perfectly at the place in miami..

'r.n.i.' table by chul an kwak
i am not sure if you have been so lucky but if you have ever seen an octopus moving underwater you will surely aggree with me that this looks exactly like that! and for this reason i can only picture this table moving.. beautiful..

I have talked for a long time about the possibilities of an outdoor shower for our place in Miami.. there is really nothing better.. both for just hanging out in the back yard on a hot day, when getting out of the pool, or just as an outdoor option to the morning routine.. i often use the pool as a morning refresher.. this design is equally as special becuase it allows the sun to heat the water that is stored in the hose.. very smart!

squba by ringspeed is a 'diving' car.. or underwater car. I am not loving the lines of it.. i think there is a pontiac or saturn out there that looks just like this.. why not more of a sub style but with the ability to drive itself to its own trailer? I sort of think the above is a bit of a joke but hey.. the idea is real fun to think about

KITCH 2

the learning curve of kitsch...
so i went from ignorently looking at kitsch as being only vulgar or shock.. then when i looked at it more and thought more about it i realized that it is just as much about being playful, akward, a little something different.. almost like a blemish or a funny stain. I also think a lot about using vintage colours and images.. because the sort of stick out akwardly.. you dont dislike it at all.. but it is just for some reason a little funny or makes you smile.
I think thaat this new found discovery really came from looking at Andrea's work.. it has becuase so playful and fun in a way.. but the line consistancy makes it a little different.. thoes little quirks and little dives make it special.. thanks andrea!

Lamborghini Reventon.. wow.. it has definitally been making its rounds... scary lines.. i feel intimidated by it everytime i see it (only photos.. have not seen one in person yet.. but.. it will happen soon im sure being in miami)
The Ikea Hotel

Try before you buy. Have a small hotel for people to stay at... carry series of furn in each.. people can try out what it is like to live with it for a day.
Could just apply idea to hotel industry in general.. which i think they are doing already a little.. like the glasses.. go for it.. take them and be charged $.. or simply call and front desk will supply you with a new set at either your hotel room door.. or shipped directly to your home.. i like that

digital polaroid...
yes.. and 1st off.. it will take away from the excitment and nostalgia of a true polaroid.. but just having the chance to produce a piece of paper or a keep sake for your friend to take home.. just as valuable..
it will sell.

floating hotel...
beautiful boat outfitted with a few rooms.. please do not thin k of it as a cruise.. more of a boutique hotel that happens to grace the ports of some amazing costal cities. beautiful idea!
less of a strategist and more of a opportunist

Last night I went to a great lecture at SCAD by visiting architect Brian MacKay-Lyons. He is from Halifax! I saw his name on the upcoming events and got excited to hear him talk becuase I love his work! It was nice to hear him speak of our culture (wood & fishing) and how to create building that can withstand our climate in Nova Scotia. The most important thing he said was how he uses a participation design with his clients.. so that they are as much involved in the design process as he is... and I have been writing about this for a while.. so it was nice to hear it come out of his mouth. I look at it as being more client centered.. but that is becuase of the health professional in me.

KITSCH

what is it? I have heard the term float around but can kind of think of a few things which may be classified as it..
so i think of it as having a direct correlation with shock value.. is this just me?? i think untasteful and sort out out of place...
like an interesting artist that i always keep my eye on when i am in miami is eurydice.. yes.. interesting name and even more interesting work.. i love her work.. i think it is a great how it makes me think of a really old grandmother type sitting and carefully knitting these outrageous scenes....

Eurydice's Studio is located at 810 Lincoln Road #108 in the heart of South Beach in Miami Beach, Florida
As we (Andrea and i) looked her up we found that she studied with lichtenstein.. another artist we that may fall under kitsch...
jonathan adler plays a little with his use of boobies and the occational marijawanna leaf here and there... we were in the store the other night on lincon and i snapped a few photos.. not knowing at the time i would think about these kitsch artists.. should kitsch be under quotations?

jonathan adler his line is amazing now.. everything is a pleasure to look at and brings a real smile to the face.. i dont think i ever leave his store mad.. haha

i saw this work and it really shocked me how real it looked.. please check out the decapitator's photos.. again.. is this kitsch?
so.. anyway.. andrea needs to come up with a kitsch pattern for her class and it is fun/interesting to think of the things you could do (naked/sex print on old lady wear.... knitted/embroydered details).. i think it is just me that sex and nudity are included.. but i also think about formal meets unformal... or mixing of classes/gender/race/etc.... all of thoes things that push it a little.. or just are maybe a little funny.. like maybe a black silhouette of a cute puppy and then his little lipstick is showing in pink... cute but a little riskehhh..
so.. here we are..
great finish to the story

The following information is from Foster + Partners:

Foster + Partners creates the world’s largest single building
One of the world’s most ambitious building projects, Crystal Island has been granted preliminary planning permission in Moscow. Enclosed within a vast mega structure covering a total floor area of 2.5million square metres – the project’s scale is unprecedented. At 450m the scheme is one of the tallest structures enclosing the largest volume, on the planet. It also creates a spectacular new emblem on the Moscow skyline. Conceived as a self-contained city within a city, it contains a rich mix of buildings including museums, theatres and cinemas, to ensure that it is a major new destination for the whole of Moscow.
It is just amazing that people are planning things this large.. it is exciting but also a little scary to me. I wish them all the best and hope that the environment is put at the forefront of the design process.
